If you want to see the whole gamut of negative emotions on parade in an organization, look at the life of an idea.
An idea is something new, something that breaks the boundaries of the known and reaches outward, creating a new space, a new frontier. It exists as an alien in time and space, a foreigner visiting a strange shore.
Every innovation since the time of the wheel has faced opposition from those firmly wedded to reality as it is. This reality is, in essence, a closed loop of habits that expressly refuse to see change even when it’s staring them in the face. The experience of a comfort zone is one in which the doors are firmly sealed shut. Welded closed.
Yet paradoxically, we live in a time when creativity — our collective ability to cooperate and collaborate — is the dominant principle of survival.
Our competences at generating alternatives and new ways of being or living will be the means by which we overcome strategic and operational problems in all sectors of life.
This is obvious:
We live in an age which is undergoing change. A massive tsunami of change, in fact, driven by scientific and technological disruptions that are upending everything we know and rely on. From medicine, politics, manufacturing, war, education, nothing is off the table. This is expected to be exponential.
